The backstory of the Dive Bomber Chair …
Sean initially floated the idea of doing a collaboration last year and we were immediately on board. From our side both brands share similar values in regards to design. Priority on function, quality and aesthetics. Once we settled on a collaboration around the Campbell Lounge Chair we deconstructed the elements down to the frame and built them back up to give our own take. The concept delivered is a more luxurious version of two things that are part of the OLA CANVAS design DNA; durability and a love for the ocean.
In reconstructing the chair we chose two fabrics for the cushions, a mix of military and marine. The primary, used for the front and back of the cushions is a lux off white herringbone fabric with an amazing hand feel. Herringbone is a classic type of weave used in military apparel and was the first ever “rip-stop” fabric. The secondary fabric is a heavy duty but upgraded nylon which is used for covers on yachts and sailboats. The chair is finished with accents found in our bags and other products such as marine grade brass grommets and nylon webbing
The dive bomber or Pelican originally stemmed from a photo I (Andrew Atkinson co founder and creative director) took in Mexico. Pelicans are the king of seabirds and have become part of the iconography of the brand. They are great swimmers, graceful in flight and are known to travel hundreds of miles at a time. The coordinates are another OLA CANVAS signature. Coordinates are a nod to nautical navigation but they are also a symbol of discovery and exploration. The Costa Mesa coordinates are somewhat of a juxtaposition because there is that representation of exploration but the location is our backyard, our home base. They are also relevant for this project because they represent the shared importance of Costa Mesa for both Sean Woolsey Studio and OLA CANVAS.
